Extra Mile Day Celebrates Volunteer Spirit in 500 Cities

November 1 Declaration Recognizes Difference-Making Impact of Volunteers

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 28, 2020 -- Mayors from over 500 cities will declare November 1st Extra Mile Day - a day to celebrate individuals and organizations who are "going the extra mile" to support local community events and services. From Palmer, Alaska, to Charlotte, North Carolina, mayors are acknowledging the impact of volunteers in their community.

In connection with Extra Mile America, mayors in all 50 states have embraced the "Extra Mile Day" movement. At a time when requests for local services continuously don't match budgets, Extra Mile Day celebrates the individuals who are stepping forward and serving. The vision of motivational author Shawn Anderson, Extra Mile Day was created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities. Since its early roots, the unique declaration has grown exponentially.

Mayor Frank C. Ortis has made the "Extra Mile Day" declaration in Pembroke Pines, Florida. "This very difficult year has inspired many to 'go the extra mile' in helping others through food distributions, as first responders, working in our health facilities and looking out for others in our community by doing simple, yet impactful, actions. Heroes abound in our community."

Another "Extra Mile Day" city is Thornton, Colorado and Mayor Jan Kulmann. "Thornton is always trying to provide the best service possible to our residents and businesses, but we also know that our efforts are often capped at what we can budget for. It's then the volunteers who come in and take the efforts and service to the next level - filling needs that many cities just can't. We celebrate and honor those individuals who commit their time and energy for these efforts."

"Going the extra mile and making a difference happens in a thousand different ways," shares Anderson, the visionary behind the "Extra Mile Day" declaration. "It's the frontline workers who are supporting all of us in 2020. They are the parents helping parents with homeschooling. They are the volunteers helping abandoned pets find new homes. It's these people - and hundreds of others - who unselfishly add value to our lives."

Anderson concludes, "'Extra Mile Day' reminds us not to point fingers at everything that's going wrong in society. Instead, it's a nudge to look in the mirror and ask, 'How am I going the extra mile to make things better?' It's not slogans that make America great. Rather, it's the hundreds of thousands of people who selflessly give of themselves."

"Extra Mile America" empowers individuals, organizations, and cities to "go the extra mile." Our work is inspired by the belief that "going the extra mile" opens doors to new possibilities. "Going the extra mile" improves the results we find in life, both professionally and personally. "Going the extra mile" allows us to make a difference in our community and in our world.
