Mezil chose the cleaning industry because it lacked innovation and he saw opportunities to unite cleaners and become the "Starbucks of cleaning services". From the beginning, he set a goal to provide a service that prioritized cleaner happiness more than anything, as he is a firm believer in that happy workers resulted in happy clients. Aside from utilizing latest technology to build a seamless online booking experience, creating a safe and positive work environment where cleaners felt empowered was just as crucial, if not more.
Abdul El-Sayed joined Hellamaid as COO in 2019, with a vision of creating an Uber-like marketplace for the promising cleaning company. El-Sayed has an extensive background in technology, it all started when he founded ChefHero (currently named Notch), a marketplace that connects restaurants with food suppliers. He scaled ChefHero from a team of three to 50 employees in two years, raising multiple VC rounds. He also founded CampusMate, an AI-powered course-based messaging app.
El-Sayed has utilized his expertise to build apps and create a convenient online booking system for Hellamaid. Clients can view clear pricing and customize their bookings to meet their specific needs. Clients can also utilize the online booking system to schedule recurring cleanings and receive a discount on their services. Cleaners can also add their own availability and work flexible shifts. Not only that, but Hellamaid is also working on automating bookings' scheduling based on the type of cleaning, home size, and cleaning add-ons.
Mezil and El-Sayed use a similar hiring model to Uber, hiring independent contractors in Hellamaid's service areas. Independent contractors are experienced, professional cleaners that go through a rigorous background check and in-person interview. Hellamaid focuses on hiring based on character, looking for independent contractors that are passionate, caring, and service oriented.
Hellamaid prioritizes the satisfaction of their professional contractors by offering flexibility and competitive pay that cannot be found with traditional local cleaning companies. Contractors have the ability to control their schedule and get paid weekly. Bonuses and tips are also available for independent contractors. As a result of paying their cleaners well above the industry average, Hellamaid became a certified Ontario Living Wage employer as of 2020.
Hellamaid started in Guelph and now serves six regions across Southern Ontario. Mezil and El-Sayed have plans to expand Hellamaid's service regions to include the entire Greater Toronto Area in 2022 before launching in other provinces in the coming years. The small side hustle business has quickly grown in the last four years, providing cleaning services to hundreds of homes each week. Today, Hellamaid is a multimillion-dollar business averaging about 15% growth month over month with no plans to slow down.
