Illinois' New Auto Insurance Enforcement Program Begins July 1

SPRINGFIELD, IL, June 09, 2021 -- Effective July 1, 2021, the Illinois Secretary of State will launch a robust electronic verification system to monitor all registered vehicles in Illinois for car insurance. Vehicles will be checked randomly at least twice per year and also electronically verified upon non-insurance compliance citations via the court system. If electronic verification is unsuccessful, the Secretary of State's office will send a written request to the vehicle owner allowing them to prove they have insurance before suspending their vehicle registration.
Illinois law requires all motor vehicles registered and operated in Illinois to be covered by liability insurance, which covers property damage and/or injuries one may cause others in an accident. The minimum required amounts are:
• $25,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident
• $50,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident
• $20,000 for damage to property of another person.
