Heartland Advisors Honored Again with Two "Bull and Bear Master" Designations on PSN Manager Database for Performance of Heartland Mid Cap Value Strategy and Heartland Opportunistic Equity Strategy

Honored for performance during both advancing and declining markets relative to peers

MILWAUKEE, WI, June 13, 2019 -- For the second quarter in a row, Heartland Advisors has been awarded two "Bull and Bear Master" designations by Informa Investment Solutions' PSN manager database, the longest-running database of investment managers in North America.

• Heartland's Mid Cap Value strategy was recognized for top-ten performance in PSN's "mid value" universe for the three-year period ending March 31, 2019.

• Heartland's Opportunistic Value Equity strategy was recognized for top-ten results over the same time period in PSN's "all cap value" universe.

In each case, the strategy was awarded based on performance during both up markets and down markets.

Specifically, PSN awards "Bull and Bear Master" designations based on style adherence and advancing more than the market during upswings (upside capture ratio) and declining less than the market during downturns (downside capture ratio). The top-ten performers are selected based on the ratio of the upside capture ratio to the downside capture ratio for the latest three-year period.

Both Heartland's Mid Cap Value and Opportunistic Value Equity strategies are co-managed by portfolio managers Colin McWey, CFA and Will Nasgovitz. Learn more about the strategies at heartlandadvisors.com.

Past performance does not guarantee future results.

Investing involves risk, including the loss of principal. There is no guarantee that a particular investment strategy will be successful.

The Mid Cap Value Strategy seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing in mid-size companies as defined by the market capitalization range of the Russell Midcap® Index. This focused portfolio seeks companies with strong underlying business franchises priced at a discount to their intrinsic worth that have temporarily fallen out of favor.

The Mid Cap Value Strategy invests in mid-sized companies on a value basis. Mid-sized securities generally are more volatile and less liquid than those of larger companies. Value investments are subject to the risk that their intrinsic values may not be recognized by the broader market.

The Opportunistic Value Equity Strategy seeks to capture long-term capital appreciation by investing in companies with market capitalizations greater than $500 million. The Strategy's flexible pursuit of value positions it as a core holding for investors.

In addition to stocks of large companies, the Opportunistic Value Equity Strategy invests in stocks of small- and mid-cap companies that are generally less liquid than large companies. The performance of these holdings generally will increase the volatility of the strategy's returns. Value investments are subject to the risk that their intrinsic values may not be recognized by the broader market.
